2017 Pet Blogger Challenge

Spread the love

While this hasn’t been exclusively a pet blog, I have featured some posts including my best pal, Bailey and we are going to be doing a lot of travel together this year, so I’ll be writing a lot about dog-friendly hotels, campgrounds, hikes…and kennels for a few spots that aren’t so dog-friendly, like National Parks!  When I found out about the pet blogger challenge, I thought it was a good way to learn more about the pet blogging community and explore a new genre for my own blog!

  • When did you start your blog and, for anyone who is just seeing it for first time, please provide a description of your site. Would you say your blog focuses more on sharing stories with your readers, or providing a resource for your audience?
    • I started a blog about two years ago as friends and family encouraged me to write about my travels.  Even though I’m employed full-time in an office job, I manage to take some pretty interesting trips each year and last year I cashed in 30 vacation days over the course of the year.  I enjoy adventure travel – hiking, backpacking, kayaking, but usually with a nice hotel and spa day thrown in at the end.  Whenever possible, I’m traveling with my rescued Airedale Terrier, Bailey.
  • What was your proudest blogging moment of 2016?
    • Seeing other travel bloggers visit my site and comment on my posts lets me know that people are actually reading!
  • Which of your blog posts was your favorite this year and why?
    • The post wrapping up two weeks in Asia – this was my biggest trip of the year, and by far the most adventurous solo trip I’d taken to date, so reliving it while writing about it was fun.
  • Year after year, one goal that we all seem to share is that we want to reach more people. What one tool did you use or action did you take this year that had the most impact on increasing traffic to your blog?
    • I’m still very new at this, but remembering to use Social Media to drive people to my blog, as well as getting others to share my posts, such as hotels I’ve featured.
  • Which of your blog posts got the most traffic this year? Have you noticed any themes across your most popular posts?
    • My post about my favorite hotels got the most traffic this year.  Blog-wise, my most popular posts have been those where I can get some social sharing and in this instance, the hotels I featured also shared my post and helped drive traffic.
  • What blog do you find most inspirational and how has it influenced your blog?
    • One of my favorite blogs is Ottsworld, she is a full time traveler/blogger/photographer and living what seems to be a dream life, but also paints a very realistic picture about her life – the good and the bad!
  • What is one thing your readers don’t know about you or your pets that would surprise them?
    • Bailey is a therapy animal and we visit a group home in Chicago about twice a month!
  • What would you like to accomplish on your blog in 2017?
    • I would like to increase traffic and start to explore options to generate income, either through affiliate links or sponsored posts.
  • Now it’s your turn! You have the attention of the pet blogging community – is there a question you’d like answered, or an aspect of your blog that you’d like input on?
    • What was the pivotal moment for you in blogging?

  1. Thanks so much for participating in the Challenge – it’s always wonderful to meet a fellow pet traveler. Bailey is gorgeous and I can’t wait to see where your adventures take the two of of you in 2017.

I think the pivotal moment for me in blogging was getting started. Since then it’s been a constant journey of finding my voice, improving my photography, and learning to better share the information we’re learning with others. It’s amazing to look back and see how far we’ve come, and I look forward to discovering what’s around the next corner.

  2. Nice to meet a fellow traveler. We are full time RVers with two dogs, who hang out in the west. I’m a photographer, hubby is a sculptor and we travel to art shows. Maybe we will run into each other.
The pivotal moment for me in blogging was in 2015 when I rebranded and focused more on who we are, and what we do. You have to write what you like.

    • Hi Mary – sounds like fun – we will be traveling through the West in September, so maybe we will run into you! I’ll be the one tent camping and sneaking showers in the fancy RV campgrounds 🙂

  3. So nice to meet you and Bailey! We love travel, especially with our pup, Haley, so we’ll be sure to come back and spend some time learning more about your travels and tips!

Pivotal moment was when I got my first big bump in traffic from a post I made on Reddit. I wish I had more time to invest there, but there’s only so many hours in the day, haha!

    Good luck in 2017!

    • Thanks for stopping by, Elaine! I’ll have to spend some time on Reddit and see how that might tie in to my blog!

  4. This is my first visit to your site! I will definitely check out some of your travel posts. Very cool that Bailey is a therapy dog. The pivotal blogging moment for me was when I attended BlogPaws for the first time last year.

    • DogPaws…I bet that is a blast, meeting up with a bunch of like-minded dog lovers! I will have to check it out!

  5. Another fellow traveler here! My blog is travelingdoglady and I am co-owner of a nationwide student group tour company (“the French class goes to France with their teacher” type of trips). Anyway, just wanted to say hi and hope to see more from you in the future! I travel with my two dogs as often as I can, too.

    • Hi Kathy – that sounds like a super fun job! I actually went to France with my French class in high school, haha! Way back before the internet, lol!

      • You may have gone with my company! I’ve been with the company since 1984! We invented the internet ha ha! But seriously, we DID invent student travel (well, my late husband did).

  6. I’m glad I found you on the Pet Friendly Challenge. All your adventures sound right up our alley! We also love getting outdoors with our pup so I look forward to seeing where you head this year. I often forget to ask the places I write about to share my posts as well, so this is a great reminder to do so!

Oof. Pivotal moment in our blog? I think we’re still waiting for it to happen! We just got a new logo and will be redesigning the blog early this year, so I think I’ll go with that for now.

    • Thanks for stopping by, Jessica! I am already following your blog because I am obsessed with dachshunds – they are so cute!

  7. Thanks for sharing your experience. I’ll definitely be following. I love the idea of traveling, but I’m such a homebody that the only trips I take are blog related (conferences, SuperZoo, etc) where I can also spend time with friends. I’d much prefer to be at home with my dogs. So I love seeing the world through the eyes of others.

The pivotal points in my blogging were narrowing my niche to raw feeding (my traffic increased by 500% in a year) and cracking the affiliate marketing code and quadrupling my income. I’m not ready to quit the day job, but it’s wonderful to feel that I’m on the right path.

  8. The pivotal moment for me was when I deleted my website and just concentrated on the blog entirely (the two had co-existed for a few months). I’ve never looked back!

I hope you enjoy your travels in 2017! 🙂

  9. I don’t get to do much traveling with my pets, but it’s lovely to follow someone who does.

My pivotal moment was hitting publish six years ago. Actually, everytime I hit publish, it’s pivotal. 🙂

  10. I am just discovering your site and will definitely be following in 2017! We also blog about travel and hiking and it’s nice to see what adventures others are up to! We are now following you across all of your social media platforms.

To answer your question, I think the pivotal moment for me in blogging was when I began hearing from folks who could relate to certain things I was blogging about. Knowing you’ve touched someone in a positive way means a lot.

    Good luck in 2017!

    • Thanks, Shannon! I’m reading your Cairn review now as I’ve been curious about this for a while – I love the surprise of subscriptions, but am also trending toward minimalism and reducing clutter, so I haven’t signed up yet!

  11. Hi Leigh,
Oh, I so love Airedales..!! I have a little Lakeland Terrier and as you would know, they call them the mini-Airdale. He is gorgeous. Good work on the blog, You have some beautiful photos.
Not sure if I have a pivotal moment but I found it very helpful to follow a few online marketing sites to help understand the technical side of blogging. Good luck in 2017

  12. This is why I love these challenges. I’m excited to start following your travels! We travel a lot as well , usually with our rescued Yorkie/Schnauzer in tow.
