During our escape from Arizona last summer, Bailey and I traveled to several Colorado mountain towns. Breckenridge is one of my favorite Colorado ski towns, and I always look forward to returning, no matter the season. After camping in Leadville for a week, followed by a couple of days in Vail Village, we headed to Breckenridge for two nights at the Residence Inn Breckenridge. Residence Inn is one of my favorite hotel chains because the rooms are like a small, cozy apartment with everything you could ever need. Last year, we stayed at several Residence Inns, including Roseville, Minnesota, and Prescott, Arizona. On previous trips to Breckenridge, I stayed at the Marriott Mountain Resort, but I was excited when I learned a new Residence Inn had opened up right in town. As a bonus, it’s pet-friendly, so I had no trouble deciding where to stay in Breckenridge with my dog.

Things to do in Breckenridge in Summer

Obviously, Breckenridge is a huge ski destination, but there are plenty of fun things to do in the summer as well.

• Whitewater Rafting is one of my favorite summer activities and there’s plenty of it on the rivers surrounding Breckenridge. Book a 1/2 day rafting trip on the Arkansas River
• Hike a 14’er! Quandary Peak is nearby and is one of the “easier” 14,000 peaks for day hikers. Plenty of more tame hiking options abound in the area.
• Shop! Breckenridge’s main street is lined with fun shops and boutiques where you can buy everything from cheesy t-shirts to gorgeous jewelry.
• Head to Frisco and the Dillon Reservoir for boating, kayaking, or SUP.
• Check out the Granite Mountain Zipline in nearby Buena Vista

Where to Stay in Breckenridge with Dogs

I was shocked when I pulled up to the Residence Inn at how close it is to town. I’d only given the map a precursory glance and assumed the hotel was south a bit where new construction is happening. Much to my surprise, the Residence Inn Breckenridge is directly behind the Breckenridge Brewery. This meant I didn’t actually have to drive anywhere. (Except for the grocery store, but the hotel will even go get groceries for you!) I love it when I can park my car for an extended time, and it was especially great to be able to stroll right down Breckenridge’s main street. Breckenridge is small enough that it’s super walkable, so this is a great location to stay, especially if you want to walk to all the bars, restaurants, and boutiques. In the winter, there’s even a shuttle that will connect you to the ski lifts.

Colorado also has some of the best hot springs resorts in the United States!

Residence Inn Breckenridge Pet Policy

We were treated to the resort’s “Play with Pups” package, which includes a goodie bag for Bailey with treats and toys, plus water bowls and a Breckenridge activity guide, specially curated for families traveling with pets. The activity guide was so well thought out and detailed, especially the hiking suggestions.

The Residence Inn Breckenridge goes above and beyond to make dogs and their owners feel welcome. The hotel charges a $100 pet fee, per stay. It seems high at first, but this is an extended stay hotel, so most guests are staying for more than a couple of nights. If you’re visiting Breckenridge for a week, that works out to under $15/night, which is comparable to other dog-friendly hotel chains. ($25/night is the average we pay)

Residence Inn Breckenridge Suites

As much as I love a cute, unique boutique hotel, I’m an even bigger fan of consistency. I love that when I arrive at a Residence Inn, I already know what the room is going to look like before I even check in. I love that, as an extended stay, they’ve thought of little details most hotels miss. Like a coat rack with hooks to hang your keys. It sounds like a small detail, but it just makes me feel so much more at home and not like a temporary hotel room. And a humidifier. (A must in this dry climate!) Being able to stream Netflix on the TV while I worked on my laptop was a luxury I don’t even have at home. The free WiFi had plenty of speed, I never felt the need to upgrade to the $4.95/day plan. It might sound silly, but having windows that opened was wonderful – I generally hate air conditioning, and being able to get fresh, Colorado air circulating in the room felt great! Bailey loved it, too!

Residence Inn Breckenridge Amenities

The other thing I love at this, and other Residence Inns, are the community areas. In addition to an outdoor pool and spa, there’s a great lounge area in front of the hotel where can enjoy a fire pit as you watch the sun go down over the beautiful mountains. There are BBQ grills if you feel like cooking. Inside, there is a bar open in the late afternoons and evenings, plus a complimentary breakfast every day. Did I mention no resort fee? I find resort fees to be one of the most annoying travel occurrences, which unfortunately seems to be more and more common. So, I’m always happy when a hotel doesn’t participate in that racket.

I can’t wait to come back to the stay at the Residence Inn Breckenridge again – one of our favorite pet-friendly hotels in Colorado!
